Mumbai & Monsoon!
“Let the rain kiss you. Let the rain beat upon your head with silver liquid drops. Let the rain sing you a lullaby.” -Langston Hughes
Monsoon will always remain special for me, in fact to most of the people. That’s what Monsoon does to you. Regardless of how annoying it may be to travel with those wet, filthy feet or get splashed by those speeding cars or to get caught in those sloppy muddy potholes, get poked by unheralded umbrellas, monsoon creates a magic that is extremely hard to resist.
The weather changes radically in Monsoon. The entire aura of the city becomes so soothing, so relaxing. Some call it “dull” however for a city like Mumbai that travels at the pace of the light, this alleged “dullness” is much needed.
Monsoon teaches a lot, wondering what and how? Monsoon teaches us to share cabs, rickshaws, car pooling. It teaches a fast moving Mumbaikar to calm down, to gaze around, traffic jams reminds us to relish the radio songs or to look around while in the jam. You will find little kids jumping in those muddy puddles, splashing water on each other, making paper boats or simply running around here and there.
From the Queen’s necklace to Bandra Carter’s, everything is just so breathtaking. The sky is dark, not precisely dim but rather with a Golden tint. The clouds are embracing, the atmosphere is alluring. That smell when it rains for the first time, Petrichor as they term it, is so reviving. Mumbai monsoon can propel you and make you a couch potato at the same time. It’s ironic how as the raindrops fall, the spirits are lifted up!
How kids want it to rain so that they don’t have to go to the school and on the other hand how working people don’t want rains so that they can travel to work without much hassle.Despite all this, no one really abhors monsoon. You’re wet but because of the rains and not the sweat, a true blessing in disguise. Given a choice, one would definitely love to toss those umbrellas out and just live and roister!
Drinking chai at Marine drive while you allow your soul to swim in the sea of musings, eating Bhutta while letting the drops of rain draw you to the city’s beauty. Might sound “filmy” but the feel is so real.
Media loves monsoon too, they get easy “Breaking News” regarding floods every now and then!
Monsoon is the time to take a break and just relish everything around, acknowledge everything that you have. Go for a drive around the city, enjoy the enchanting sights. Watch boys play football, watch people cherish their love, monsoon as a lot in store for everyone of us. Get motivated, get lazy!
Rain and Romance are tantamount, so drop the fights with your partner and enjoy every sensuous second of monsoon. Let monsoon drive you to pick your phone and dial your old-lost friend who once played with you in the rains, who you had once shared an umbrella with! Monsoon is an ideal time to rewind, to let go! Let go of the ego and pardon that one friend who you’re mad at. Call them up and tell them you miss them, you’ll be dazed to know that the feeling is mutual!
